After reading the earlier post about the bowler hats @ Target for just $15, I stopped off at lunch to check them out. They were a little hard to find, buried in a back row, but...Glee!

And right around the corner? Something even better:

Just $30 and they come in brown or black in all sorts of sizes. Accurate ones, even.

Serge can agree with me on this. We've been doing research on racing designs for cars, trucks, and motorcycles for years. I've come up with a couple of conclusions for the neophytes that think cars are cars, who cares, right? Not so fast there!

1. Standards: It's very similar to the Computer Operating System world. The racing organization gives you a standardized frame to comply with (NASCAR, NHRA, IRL, etc) and you tune the hell out of it based on those rules and you are good to go. The goal is to create a platform so you can compete. Obviously throughout the years these standards need tweaking or overhauls. That's life.
2. Engines: V8 blocks are mostly American metal stock. The major differences are racing engines have no catalytic converters (clean exhaust filters), no mufflers (sound filters), still use carburetors (pure air/fuel add vs. electronic fuel injection), hand-crafted cylinders to exacting precision for extremely high-temperature runs, and wider air bores all around to keep the engine cooler and allow the driver to control the speeds faster when passing and dodging. The result is an engine that produces upwards of about 700HP to 1000HP depending on type of race. Don't even try to guess how much funny-car drag engines can achieve.
3. Safety: All vehicles have roll-bars and massive cages around the drivers that are designed to protect them against 4000-5000 Lbs. of metal running into them or any collision into a wall and allow them to literally walk away after such an accident. Compare that to a regular car you drive today; you'd be dead.
4. Control: The external frame is boxier and ugly for a reason. The less aerodynamics, the more control a driver has for passing and less chance of flying around the track. Thus you have wider stance, more vertical front windshield, large rear wings, and front drag dam to displace more air. The tires have little or no treads to maximize rubber to road cohesion (remember surface tension?) to assist the driver in being able to control the car in much more precise engagement.
5. Entertainment: What makes racing so entertaining? It's the fact that the vehicles appeal to the carnal fighting nature within us. Much like football and boxing and rugby, you want to see and know that the rawest, purest form of man-made power is put to the extremes.

I just thought I'd share that with you all. OK, that's it for now.

If I disappear for a few days it's because Tropical Storm Ida is supposed to be moving right through the area where I live. As of Noon CST Monday the center of Ida was located about 115 miles to the southeast of the Mouth of the Mississippi River or about 220 miles south-southwest of Pensacola, Florida. A turn to the north is expected this afternoon followed by a turn to the northeast tonight. I live less than 30 miles east of Pensacola (in the general direction of the expected turns).

I just spent some of the morning moving things around in the garage so we can fit both cars inside. Been meaning to do it for a while anyway. *LOL* School has been canceled for tomorrow (the kids are out Wednesday for Veterans Day). Only thing left outside right now is the garbage can which will be dealt with later. We haven't put the plywood hurricane shutters up just yet, will likely do it this afternoon.

Things aren't too bad right now. A little wind and light rain. Depending on things we might pack up and head to my Mother-In-Laws for the night. She lives 20 minutes away, but inland!

Take care everyone!

So, I am turning 40. And that only happens once. To celebrate, we're having a pub crawl on Thursday, the 19th. The party will be suiting up in steamy gear, and the festivities will be led by the nationally known Marquish, King of Jesters and Jester of Kings. We will be starting at The Melting Pot for gooey cheese and desserty noms at around 7:30 on 6th St in Austin (I'd like a headcount for that, natch). But that means that around 9, we'll start at one end of 6th St and try and drink and party our way down it. If you're interested and can make it, drop a comment here and I'll tally everyone. I know that other people should be trying to arrange this, but you know what? I DON'T CARE! Let's do this thing.

Hi everyone!

My friend [info]ifotismeni and I are huge Final Fantasy VI fans. We did a 13-person FFVI group at Otakon of this year and decided to bring out the costumes again for Halloween for a semi-impromptu photoshoot a few weeks ago. The leaves were changing color and starting to fall, which made a really awesome World of Ruin backdrop for us that day. I cosplay Shadow, Playstation FMV version, and she cosplays Kefka, Amano version.

I'm leaving this city for the skies above

World of Ruin! )

Please enjoy! If you were interested in seeing the Otakon photoshoot, some photos of it are here as well.

Happy cosplaying!

If you can find it still find it in the stores
stella-mccartney-x-gap-kids-04

Stella McCartney has made a fabulous collection for Gap Kids with these two coats and much more for kids from very little to about 12 years old size. Hell I am short enough to hunt about and find the military jacket to see if it would fit as a crop coat but it looks like its already a super hard jacket to find and probaly even harder in there largest kid size to see if short people could make it work.

You can find parts and bits of the new line here
http://www.gap.com/browse/info.do?cid=51415&mlink=6170,1488341,1&clink=1488341
People with children or are short enough to wear this post photos of you get your kid or yourself in that military jacket.

Hey everyone~

I'm the captain of the SSC Crew

As a group. We do a lot of otome games cosplay. and we still do. Except when it comes to One Piece, I'm on my own really. None of them are interested in the series. Which i believe they're missing out, plus it makes me sad. But that's fine, i rather do it on my own then forcing OP on them.

But as a side but main thing. I STILL want to recruit a One Piece Straw hat Pirate crew. it's like my mission. lol

We only cosplay One Piece for Anime Expo, so it's once every year. Different version every year. I usually cosplay Nami and sometimes Luffy. They're my two OP characters that i go back and forth with. So whoever interested in joining will get to pick 2 characters they want to jump back and forth when they want to. All version will be "interesting" looking. Not your regular crew clothes. For example. I've been doing Unlimited Adventure OP, upcoming is Unlimited Cruise, I've already done Strong World Mafia Luffy. Such and such...So if you're interested in joining. please be aware that stuff we do won't be easy. but hey! Challenges are fun right? and the ending result are always worth it.

Anyone interested in joining?
If you are. Please contact me through PM. ^_^ :)

I love that so many of you dudes are doing NaNo! It fills my heart with glee and happy. NaNoWriMo is a Super Important Monster to me, in that if I'd never done it that first year, I probably would have never written anything ever again my entire life.

As a kid I was always like, "I'm gonna be a writer when I grow up!" But I never knew what to write about. Then as I got older and became a cynical teenager, I was like, "Pah, this writing thing will never pan out because I suck at finishing things and also I still don't know what to write about. I think I'll become a rock star instead."

Of course the rock star thing fell through, as things like that often do. I graduated high school neither a rock star nor a writer. But then that November, a friend of mine posted to her LJ, "I don't think I'm going to do NaNoWriMo this year," and it was October 31st and I clicked on the link because I was all, "What is this NaNoWriMo business?" and I read the entire contents of the site (which at that point were not as massive, as NaNo was only in its third year), and I was like, "I will do this even though I will FAIL EPICALLY" and the thing is, I didn't fail epically. I actually COMPLETED a novel.

And then I tried it the next year. And the year after that. And, okay, I failed those two years, but then I KEPT DOING IT and I haven't failed since, and then I started realizing that I didn't have to only write in November, there were eleven other perfectly valid months in the year for writing.

And that's how I've ended up with eight rough drafts, a handful of drafts in progress and a parody of the entire Twilight series, and I still don't know what to write about, but NaNoWriMo taught me that doesn't matter as long as I can write it really fast.

The point of this story is I've got the writing thing down. I think the next step is learning that whole "revision" thing.

HAPPY NANO, EVERYBODY! KEEP ON KEEPING ON AND POST YOUR WORD COUNTS AND HEY, WE'RE ALL FRIENDS HERE, WHY NOT CHALLENGE EACH OTHER TO SOME WORD WARS? AND THROW OUT SOME DARES? I LOVE YOU GUYS.

PS: Oh yeah, I totally forgot that the whole reason I started making this post was to mention that I'm kandigurl on the NaNo site (as well as on LJ!) if you want to be my writing buddy.
